WORLD TB DAY 2022 - KEY HIGHLIGHTS

 Every year on March 24, we observe World Tuberculosis (TB) Day to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social, and economic consequences of TB and to increase efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, paving the way for diagnosing and treating the disease. 

Following are the Key Activities conducted by Provincial TB Control Program Punjab. 

Public Health Symposium at Governor House Lahore.

DESCRIPTION Grand Level Public Health Symposium was conducted by Provincial TB Control Program Punjab in collaboration with Infection Prevention & Control Foundation and other partners at Governor House on the 24th of March 2022. This was a mega event and various dignitaries including Director General Health Services Punjab Dr. Haroon Jahangir Khan, Federal Joint Secretary, and national Coordinator Common Management Unit Mr. Bashir Khetran along with representatives from the National TB Control Program, different hospitals, and implementing partners also participated in the Grand event.  A panel discussion was also conducted with the experts at the event. The purpose of the Panel discussion is to spark conversation between a group of experts from PTP, WHO, and partners so that the audience can learn from their discourse and interaction. The chief guest of the event Mrs. Ghulam Sarwer (Governor Punjab) also appreciated the efforts of the Provincial TB Control Program and also distributed shields to worthy dignitaries.

DESCRIPTION A Grand Awareness Seminar was conducted by the Provincial TB Control Program Punjab in collaboration with W.H.O at Government College University, Lahore on the 21st of March 2022. Dr. Haroon Jahangir khan Director General Health Services Punjab graced the event as chief guest. While other dignitaries include Prof. Asghar Zaidi Vice Chancellor GCU, Dr. Khawaja Laeeq NPO WHO, Dr. Sarmad Wahaj Program Manager PTP Punjab, and Dr. Asif Muhammad Project Manager PTP Punjab, and Dr. Muhammad AmirTB Consultant Punjab WHO also participated in the event. The health experts emphasized the importance of combating social stigmas associated with tuberculosis, claiming that these stigmas make it more difficult for patients to seek diagnosis and treatment. Speakers also sensitized participants about TB symptoms such as a persistent cough that lasts more than three weeks and usually brings up bloody phlegm, weight loss, tiredness, and high temperature.

Save Lives’ to convey the urgent need to invest resources to ramp up the fight against TB and achieve the commitments to end TB made by global leaders. This is especially critical in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that has put End TB progress at risk, and to ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO’s drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage

DESCRIPTION Decentralization of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Clinics is one of the major deliverables of PTP Punjab as per Provincial Strategic Plan 2020-23 for improving the detection and diagnosis of DR TB at the district level. This will reduce patient travel as well as enhanced convenience to avail the quality health care services at their doorstep in their respective district. Provincial TB Control Program the commemoration of World TB Day 2022 also inaugurated two Decentralized DR TB Clinics in districts Khanewal and Vehari. This is one of the major milestones of PTP achieved about the World TB DAY 2022.

DESCRIPTION On 22nd March 2022, The Provincial TB Control Program Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department Government of Punjab in collaboration with the World Health Organization Pakistan organized a World TB Days seminar in District Hafizabad. The seminar was Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Hafizabad and Mr. Asif Raza. Dr. Palitha Mahipala WR Pakistan along with other TB Dignitaries participated in the event. During his speech, the WR praised Punjab Province for arranging World TB Day in the district. He reaffirmed WHO support for TB Control efforts in Punjab/ Pakistan. He highlighted that Pakistan is the 5th among 30 high TB burden countries in the world. WHO stands together with the Department of Health Punjab and the Provincial TB Program in its fight against TB.  He appreciated the efforts of the leadership of the District administration in their efforts for health care delivery in the district.

DG MEDICAL COLLEGE SEMINAR ON TB 

ENHANCING TB CONTROL BRAND AWARENESS

Increasing the brand awareness of TB Control Program services is very important because it creates a positive ripple effect for the general community.  Provincial TB Control Program increases the brand awareness of TB Control program through different text, audio & visual messages from the prominent national figures at the mass level to enhance public awareness of signs and symptoms of Tuberculosis coupled with the diagnosis and treatment services available at the National, Provincial as well as district and tehsil level.
