THE AIR POLLUTION-- SMOG

SMOG  - THE INEVITABLE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION

AIR POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION

With the onset of the winter season, the majority of cities worldwide were blanketed by a thick gas that stung people's eyes and blocked out the Sun, commonly known as SMOG which is A portmanteau of smoke and fog, alludes thick grey haze blanketing numerous cities of the World was coined at the beginning of the 20th century globally.

SCIENCE OF SMOG

Smog is a major issue in large metropolitan regions. The discharges from vehicles and different ventures, just as the burning of wood and coal along with the development of specific climate conditions, are the super causal specialists of Smog. SMOG terminology alludes to a combination of fluid and the strong haze and smoke particles. It is generally considered yellowish or blackish mist, which stays suspended in the air or structures a roof noticeable all around.

SCIENCE OF SMOG

INDUSTRIAL SMOG

The gaseous discharges are the fundamental components that structure Smog when followed up on by the sun's Ultraviolet light along with particulate matter and unpredictable natural mixtures. Smoke from coal burning in domestic stoves and different factories coupled with the air moisture is the fundamental precursor of Industrial Smog Globally.

CAUSES OF SMOG

PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG

Arie Haagen-Smit, a dutch Chemist also known as the father of air pollution control identified two culprits named hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides as the main causative agents of SMOG. Hydrocarbons are compounds that easily become vapors and may contain different organic elements. Meanwhile, Nitrogen oxide is being released as a result of the incomplete combustion of gas in motor vehicles. Both of these hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide produced dangerous pollutants named Peroxiacetyl NItrate (PAN) and tropospheric which cause eye irritation and damage lung tissue. Both are key ingredients in photochemical smog.

CONTRIBUTION OF VARIOUS SOURCES TO SMOG FORMATION

Following are the major sources in SMOG formation.

Why does smog affect some cities but not others?

Both industrial and photochemical smog integrate artificial pollutants with nearby climate and geography. The excessive humidity Cities globally are the top vicinity for industrial smog. Photochemical smog is most powerful in city regions with calm winds and dry, warm, sunny climates. The Sun's ultraviolet radiation gives the required energy sufficient enough to cleavage of molecules which subsidized smog formation. Cities surrounded by mountains also are particularly prone to smog due to the fact there may be nowhere for it to dissipate.

CONCLUSION:

Even though there has been extended investigation and development of methods that can help to control the pollution and mitigate its effects, these efforts have not been able to have much impact on the overall health of the environment. Millennium Development Goals followed by Sustainable development goals are signed internationally by all countries to tackle the environmental related issues and to develop effective strategies to improve air quality globally. Smoke is the main component of Pollution and controlling smoke sources is proved to be worthwhile while improving the air quality worldwide. Extensive research is required to find more reliable and practical solutions for managing pollution and preserving air quality. What is in the “future” for future generations is uncertain.
